Tang Kok Thye: Designing sustainable spaces of the future

A passionate advocate of sustainability, ADDP’s Associate Partner Tang Kok Thye was appointed President of the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC ) from April 2021 to March 2023. In addition, he was appointed to the SGBC board alongside the launch of the Singapore Green Building Master Plan 2021. Introducing the transformation of the built environment into one that is sustainable and green, the plan has been included in the Singapore Green Plan 2030.

It is no surprise then that Tang was part of the EdgeProp Singapore Excellence Awards 2023 judging panel. An awards ceremony focused on sustainability, it was an area of expertise that Tang has been deeply passionate about over the years. Throughout his career, he has actively urged his developer clients to achieve the highest sustainability standards and the BCA Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy Building rating.

One of the projects that garnered recognition at this years awards was Capitaland Ascott Trust’s lyf one-north at Nepal Park. Designed with sun-shading ledges and fins to reduce façade solar heat gain, as well as windows inspired by washing machines, the 324-unit co-living building was deemed as ‘refreshing’ by Tang. He commented on how the design was attractive to young people and how it has allowed for members of the community to congregate.

This year’s awards had other noteworthy projects in terms of sustainability. Terra Hill at Pasir Panjang in the south and The Continuum at Thiam Siew Avenue in the east were jointly developed by Hoi Hup Realty and Sunway Developments and were recognised for their sustainability. Terra Hill is a low-rise, five-storey site with five-bedroom units of Top Sustainability Developer award by CPG Corp. In addition, The Continuum (an 816-unit condominium) managed to tackle the challenge of a split site with an overhead pedestrian bridge.

ADDP has a strong relationship with several of the top-tier developer clients. Many of the projects, such as The Brownstone, Whistler Grand, and EL Development’s Blossoms by the Park have been designed by their team, as well as using the prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (PPVC) method. And most recently, Lentor Modern by GuocoLand, a mixed-use development at Lentor Hills estate, integrated with the Lentor MRT Station on the Thomson-East Coast Line, is one of the many projects designed by ADDP.

Tengah Plantation EC is the perfect smart and sustainable home for individuals and families looking for a connected and secure living space. This revolutionary development is designed with the future of green living in mind, providing an innovative way to experience urban living.

For Tang, these projects have allowed him to be creative with new ways of doing things, while also strive for the highest sustainability standards. It has also allowed him to understand the need for spaces to be designed and adapted for the younger generation. As these projects are continuously pushed for a more sustainable built environment, Tang will continue to be at the forefront of such efforts.
